NOTE: 2022: Individual open salt patented June 15, 1875, patent number 8,387 granted to Wm. Leighton, Jr. According to "Hobbs, Brockunier, & Co Glass" by Neila and Tom Bredehoft, p48, the patent stipulated various bowl shapes, thereby protecting almost any glass article made in the form of a turtle. There is no evidence the company made any other turtle forms. "The turtle salt is known in crystal and porcelain (opal)."
